Summer Family Session at the Park | Orange County NY Family Photographer

Sweet Sixteen Session | Orange County NY Teen Photographer

In July, Lauren contacted me about a session for her niece who had to cancel her Sweet 16 Party in August due to local gathering restrictions. Instead, she had chosen that a Sweet 16 photo shoot would work nicely. We had such a nice day at the park and I loved that Emma was up for having some fun. She even shared some dancing moves!

Last December, I had the honor and pleasure of spending some time photographing Entertainer, Musician, Producer and Writer Ellen C Kaye. Over the last year, she has been busy with many projects and I thought it would be fun to get to know her a little better with a quick interview and to share what she is currently working on. I love going to see live music and had the chance to see her perform a few months ago and had such a fun night out! What first got you into music?

My Mom and Dad played Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Pearl Bailey, Fred Astaire, Joao Gilberto, Astrid Gilberto, and Antonius Carlos Jobim all the time. To name a few. Music was a part of our day to day life.

We lived across the street from Carnegie Hall so I got to see Judy Collins, Stephen Stills and lots of artists there. My uncle was an opera singer, Jan Peerce, and I grew up with his live performances which were thrilling. And when I got older I listened to the radio and fell in love with the Stylistics, Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Betty Wright, Jackson Browne, and on and on.

Where is the favorite place that you have performed?

I love playing when it’s packed and people are there to really hear the music. I had my own live music venue in NYC with my partners, Moscow 57, and I loved playing there. The Metropolitan Room was a great room, I miss it. And Iridium Jazz Club is one of my current favorites.

What is your favorite song to perform?

That’s a tough one. But I guess my favorite is always the newest tune I’m working on. Right now the song is Renegade, an original tune I wrote recently with my music partner Ethan Fein. I love performing it.

Which musicians do you admire?

Bonnie Raitt since I was sixteen. Tom Waits. Dinah Wasington. Annie Lennox. Billie Holiday. Dolly Parton. Pistol Annies. Ashley Monroe. Kacey Musgraves. And a ton more.

What community projects are you currently working on?

I’m working right now with my partners Alan Joseph and Ethan Fein on a few things.

Last spring I was introduced through Ms. G. Blaine, CA Internship Counselor, to the Chester Academy Mentoring Program. In September we began mentoring a few very talented students from Chester Academy. Together we’ve created a student podcast series called Sapphire Wire (https://sapphirewireproduc.wixsite.com/mysite) and have interviewed several local artists. The first episodes are up and running and we have more in the pipeline. It’s been great working with the students, I’m really enjoying it!

What creative project are you currently working on?
We are working on Phoenix Rising which is a project that has a few components: a musical theater piece in development with an original score, a multi-media show with a diverse company, and a podcast series.

It started out as my autobiographical story and now it’s expanding into an historical journey exploring my ancestors and the history that surrounds their stories.

We’ve just discovered that some of my maternal ancestors arrived in 1635 on one of the first Puritan ships that came to America. We are researching the history of military service as well and so far we have found that we are descended from people who served in almost every war America has been engaged in from the Revolutionary War ‘til now. In early spring we are bringing part of our Phoenix Rising project to North Carolina where some of our story takes place.

Where can people find you performing next?
This Saturday, December 28th we’re going to be at Quinnz Pinz raising awareness for the Middletown Warming Station. Bowling and live music with local artists. We’ll have a full band with our music director Ethan Fein on guitar and banjo. Bowling from 5-7pm. Live music from 7-9pm. I’m looking forward to it!

Fall Teen Session | Orange County NY Senior Photographer

Fall Family Session at Brown Barn Farms | Orange County NY Family Photographer

Fall Family Session in Goshen, NY | Orange County NY Family Photographer

This past fall, I had such a fun time with this family as we enjoyed a warmer September Sunday afternoon. I always love when a family brings their dog with them. As big part of their family, Cupcake really enjoyed herself with our games and exploring too. She is was just too cute!

When I took some time to do pictures with Mom and Dad, I had a wonderful assistant who helped to get best smiles and laughs. (scroll down to see the proof.)

What I love about September sessions is that we designed and created her Christmas cards before Halloween. They were ready to go right after Thanksgiving to send out to family and friends near and far.

Urban Teen Session | Orange County NY Senior Photographer

In October, I spent a few hours with my beautiful "growing up too fast" niece as a birthday gift. She brought some great ideas to the session and also was sport for all of the fun things we did. We spent the first part in an urban setting, using the buildings as a backdrop.

Even though the session was to celebrate a birthday milestone, I think it was nice to spend the quality time together in a creative collaboration.

Winter Family Christmas Session | Orange County NY Family Photographer

Can you believe I haven's shared this session from LAST December? It is something of a Christmas miracle that I have made it a point to catch up on some blogging. I do get asked if I am still working as a family photographer, and my answer is YES, I am! But I have been busy working as a photographer, but I haven't made it a priority to share and blog each session until I get a little down time. (You know that mysterious thing that never happens, down time ;) ).

I love shooting on location at a family's house and when it came to this Christmas themed shoot, I loved how the Mom jumped at the idea of pajama's and hats and just so much family love. I also love that being at their home we were able to include the furry family member, Luka!

Local Business Spotlight | Sarah Couper Coaching - Coaching for Change

In the spring, I spent some time with Sarah Couper, from Sarah Couper Coaching, Coaching for Change -- for a professional head shot session. I had met Sarah at a holiday party last December where we both take horseback riding lessons in Goshen, New York. Sarah is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Life Coach based out of Orange County, New York. I was curious about what she did as a Life Coach, so I thought it would be fun to ask her a few questions and share her answers here along with some of my favorites from her session.

Meet Sarah!

Question: What is a Life Coach?

Different people will probably give you different answers. Sometimes when people think of Life Coaching, it's about business goals, accountability, and sort of making things happen in a way that evokes struggle and tons of effort. The way I work, Life Coaching is a process that helps you find and manage your own blind spots so they don't hold you back, and its a process that helps you create your future very intentionally.

Question: Why did you decide to become a Life Coach?

So, my traditional education and experience is as a Clinical Social Worker. I've worked in various in-patient and out-patient mental health settings for over 30 years. I really love working with clients, it's definitely my life's work and a calling of sorts. But, I've seen what managed care has done to the field over the years, and I wanted to be able to work without all the trappings and assumptions of the medical model - diagnosing, focusing on problems, etc. In addition to that, I found myself a few years ago, with some health issues that I was having difficulty managing. I had gotten all the help traditional medicine had to offer, but I was still struggling. And yet, this wasn't something I would have gone to therapy for. Not that I don't believe in therapy, of course, I do. I think there are a lot of issues in life that people need help with, but that aren't particularly suited for therapy in the way that our culture sees therapy. I think in times past there was always someone you could go to for these kinds of situations - a relative, a clergy member, a medicine woman, somebody in your village or tribe, but our culture is so fragmented now, we've lost that to a large degree. So, long story short, I went to a Life Coach and was happily surprised. And, of course I don't leave all my training and experience as a psychotherapist behind; I think it adds substance and depth to my work with clients, and for some it adds to my credibility and they see me as more trustworthy.

Question: How would you describe your coaching?

In my work, I always want to guide clients back to their own wisdom and their own next steps; I want to equip them with tools to move forward. I help clients rediscover their own capabilities, I teach strategies for staying in touch with those strengths and using them effectively. So, for me and my clients, it's about getting rid of what's not working, all the socialized expectations we've bought into, getting more connected to our inner most selves, and developing strategies to help navigate the world and all it's challenges with more ease. It's challenging for clients but very rewarding. While I do a lot of listening and validating - which is incredibly important - the responsibility is really the client's and where they want to take the work. It's a bit different than therapy in that I assume clients are ready willing and able to do the often difficult work of changing their patterns - with support of course.

Question: What specific areas do you focus on?

Yes, I often work with people who are divorcing, but not exclusively. I used to be involved in a Collaborative Divorce group and I worked as a neutral divorce coach on teams with attorneys and other professionals. What I learned is that a lot of people need help to manage their feelings and find their own equilibrium in the midst of that kind of turmoil...before they can effectively deal with everything involved in a divorce. So, the way I coach clients now is quite different. I teach new skills to manage intense emotions so things don't escalate unnecessarily, strategies to increase mind-body awareness, improve access to clients' own inner wisdom, and increase compassion for themselves. I teach clients tools so they can go through the process in the way that they want to, being the person they want to be, and not someone motivated only by fear, hurt and anger. They end up making more clear-minded decisions, they feel better about themselves and they take all these new skills and awareness into building their new lives. And sometimes people come back to me later with issues around parenting, work, or new relationships. That's a big one actually because people don't want to repeat patterns they made in their previous marriages. And it's hard for us to see our own patterns, so a coach can be very helpful with that. I like to say 'a fish doesn't know it's in water.'

Question: What do I love about coaching the most?

I love watching people grow and evolve. I see myself as a facilitator, and the client does the work. It's a great privilege to have a front row seat to see the kind of transformation I get to see. It's a honor to connect with people at such deep levels, and to be trusted with their stories, their vulnerabilities. I can't imagine doing anything else.

Question: Do you offer online or telephone coaching?

Yes, to both. It's so easy now. And I find that working by telephone without the visual senses involved can actually help people focus. Not everyone likes it though so I sometimes use Zoom. And I still see people in person in my office. It's up to the client. But with online and phone coaching I love that we're not limited by geography.

Question: What are your top 3 personal development books? (Because I am a personal development book junkie ;))

So tough to choose.

'The Biology of Belief' by Bruce Lipton. 'The Body Keeps the Score' by Bessel Van DerKolk. 'Self-Compassion' By Kristen Neff. Not necessarily in that order. Others worth mentioning are 'Quiet' by Susan Cain, 'The Drama of the Gifted Child' by Alice Miller (outdated but still useful), and 'Co-dependent No More' by Melodie Beattie.

I recently spent some time with Jamie from Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique to take some updated business head shots for her to include on her website and social media. Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique has grown so much since that session so I thought it would be nice to catch up with Jamie again and share some of my favorite pictures from her business head shot session.

How did your business come about?

The start of my own business was really perfect timing. My mother is an entrepreneur, making me fully aware of the hard work and dedication that goes into running your own business. With that being said, I was fully up the challenge. When the perfect location opened up I didn’t hesitate. I run my own suite in Phenix Salon Suites in Middletown, NY. A suite setting gives the business owner the opportunity to have all the perks of your own space without all the added stressors that come along with that.

Tell me a bit about your business, what makes it special?

I’m a one-woman show! I work by appointment only which enables me to give each client my full attention. I can proudly say I have a fantastic relationship with all of my clients. I have learned how crucial environment is to a successful business. Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique has a very calming vibe, soft pinks accents with neutral walls. I searched high and low for the perfect lighting, which is everything when it comes to hair coloring! It is imperative to me that my clients feel at ease when they are a guest in my salon.

How long have you been in business?

Can’t believe its been over 3 years now!

What is your favorite part of being your own boss?

Having control of my schedule! I think everyone would agree (parents especially)—there’s nothing more annoying than being at work with nothing going on, knowing how many other million things you could be accomplishing in that time. If I’m not working, I’m not there. If I know I have something coming up, I simply don’t schedule anything that day. The flexibility is everything to me with two kids.

What are some of the products or services your offer?

I offer full color services (Highlights, Balayage, Ombre, Low- Lights, Pravana Vivid Colors). I also offer keratin treatments, haircutting and of course styling.

What is your favorite product or service you offer?

My favorite service is a color transformation. Whether it’s a full head of foils or creating a multi-dimensional red, transformations are my favorite. It is so incredibly fulfilling to me to be responsible for someone’s happiness in that moment. To have the ability to lift someone’s spirits just really makes me happy. I always follow up with my clients, especially the first time I see them, I want to make sure they’re expectations have been met. It’s extremely important to me. If there’s a piece that I know should be blonder for example I will be the first one to call it out and ask if they can stay for me to make that piece just a bit brighter. I’m a perfectionist.

I always talk about when you are pregnant time goes fast and slow all at the same time and everyone of my clients seem to agree! :)

Local Business Spotlight | Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique

My recent senior/teen model shoot would not have come about without the creative collaboration with Jamie from Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique. Jamie spent the entire afternoon of the shoot working hard and doing her magic on a lot of hair! I recently took some time to sit down with her and ask her some questions about her business.

Please take a moment and get to know Jamie and see how her business evolved and why she loves her profession!!

How did your business come about?

This is a good question. I have a funny back story as to how this profession came about for me. I took cosmetology when I was in High School, on Long Island. I took it mainly because I really didn’t know what I wanted to do and my mom is a firm believer that if you’re not certain, then you should work on a trade skill. I graduated and then worked in Property Management in NYC. Life went on, led me through a crazy path. Fast forward twelve years, I’m living in Orange County now with my husband and two daughters. I’m getting my hair done and cosmetology school comes up in conversation. I mention that I had gone but never went for my license. The salon owner over heard me and told me that the hours never expire. I had no idea. I called Sewanhaka High School to make sure I really had all my hours (knowing me I cut the last week and was short 5 hours or something) and what do you now, I did! They sent me my transcript, I sent that on to the state and a few short weeks later my temporary license arrived in the mail! With that, I called the salon owner to thank her and she offered me a job. I have a lot of gratitude for my first employers for giving me the opportunity. A colleague and friend introduced me to the color world and I fell in love. But I needed to venture on, I needed to see what else was out there. I went to another salon after that and it wasn’t a good fit. I decided to rent a chair, that’s how I came upon Chezette and her salon Total Elegance. I rent inside of her salon under the name Beautifully Blended Hair Boutique and it is, hands down, the best professional decision I ever made. I am a worker, my mom is an entrepreneur, I learned her work ethic and that nothing worth having comes easily. Once my energy was focused, everything fell into place.

Tell me a bit about your business, what makes it special?

I’m a one-woman show! I work by appointment which enables me to give each client my full attention. I can proudly say I have a fantastic relationship with all of my clients. I have learned how crucial environment is to a successful business. The salon itself is gorgeous. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, beautiful floors—very NYC SoHo vibe. Walking into that environment immediately puts the client at ease and makes them happy to be there. I provide a very different vibe then a “hustle and bustle” type salon.

How long have you been in business?

Happy One-Year Anniversary to me this past September 1, 2016! Though I’ve been a stylist for 6 years now.

What is your favorite part of being your own boss?

What are some of the products or services your offer?

I have fallen completely in love with the company Pravana (Sanskrit phrase meaning “the source of all things”). I am a firm believer that everything happens when it’s supposed to. I believe this for the simple fact that this has always been the case for me. Every step of my journey was necessary to bring me here. When I started going grey, I noticed the color I was using wasn’t living up to my expectations, I wanted to try something new. I kept hearing about Pravana from other stylists and was intrigued. I gave it a try and there was no turning back. But Pravana is much more to me than just a company, they were accessible. Which probably contributed to them being voted the Favorite Overall Color Company in 2016 at the Stylist Choice Awards. I built a great rapport with them. The one thing I did miss now that I was on my own was the “hair conversation”. I could talk hair color all day. I was aware of my longing for that, so decided to take a chance and apply with Pravana to become a Pravana Artistic Educator. Seven months and a few trips to Los Angeles later and here I am, a Certified Pravana Artistic Educator. Now, along with being a stylist, I get to teach other stylists new techniques to help them advance their careers. I can’t say enough about Pravana. They came into my life with such kindness and support when I truly needed it. I don’t know if my Pravana family will ever really know how much they mean to me. They are a remarkable company. I use all Pravana products because I believe in them and think they’re fantastic. They are all 100% vegan and 100% gluten free, inside of biodegradable and recyclable packaging. Pravana also donates 5% of all of their Nevo Styling Product sales to The City of Hope Foundation for Cancer Research.

As far as services, I offer full color services (Highlights, Balayage, Ombre, Low- Lights, Pravana Vivid Colors). I also offer haircutting and of course styling.

What is your favorite product or service you offer?

My favorite service is a color transformation. Whether it’s a full head of Balayage or taking a blonde to a red, transformations are my favorite. It is so incredibly fulfilling to me to be responsible for someone’s happiness in that moment. To have the ability to lift someone’s spirits just really makes me happy. I always follow up with my clients, especially the first time I see them, I want to make sure they’re happy with my work. It’s extremely important to me. If there’s a piece that I know should be blonder for example I will be the first one to call it out and ask if they can stay for me to make that piece just a bit brighter. I’m a perfectionist.

A smaller part of our model session was getting some shots of the girls together! I can envision doing senior sessions with a group of friends. Enjoying the time together getting ready, having professional images of each senior and then capturing their time together.

Even though the day of the shoot was the first time these girls had spent time together, they really connected and enjoyed hanging out. They even hammed it up with some silly shots together!

You may recognize this handsome young man. ;) A few week's ago we celebrated my son's First Holy Communion. This boy loves being all dressed up and was thrilled to get a chance to wear his suit. Of course I was sweating bullets concerned that we may not walk away with a clean suit after the session. But he was a gentleman and the suit was in perfect condition for his big day. Of course he has asked a few times to wear it to school now.

Sweet Finley and her Mom met me at the park a few weeks ago on a beautiful April morning. Although her mom was a bit reluctant to get in front of the camera, I am so glad that she agreed. I know that Finley enjoyed sharing the time with her Mom too!! I think sometimes it is easier for Mom's to keep out of the frame, but I know from experience how happy they are once they see the pictures knowing that their children will have these pictures to look back on.

Meet Jessica

Meet Jessica! Jessica is strong, brave, compassionate, empathetic, and independent!

On December 4, 2014 Jessica was diagnosed with Choroidal Melanoma in her right eye. She had minimal symptoms. Hazy vision, more frequent headaches and nausea when running. But nothing that stood out as a red flag.

This is her story...

I had two treatment options. The first option was radiation, the second was enucleation, or removal of the eye. I really wanted to keep my eye, so I chose what is know as Brachytherapy Plaque Radiation. This type of radiation is similar to the way prostate cancer is treated. The radiation treatment required two surgeries, one to place the radiation plaque (January 7, 2015), and a second surgery to remove the plaque (January 14, 2015). From the 7 through the 14 I was confined to my bedroom. I couldn't be in close contact with anyone because of the radiation. For some odd reason, the cats aren't affected by it. So Nathan, my gray cat, was my buddy through it all. Before I was diagnosed he attached himself to me. He didn't leave my side. During the radiation when my parents had to come in to change the dressing and give me my eye drops, Nathan would stand on my chest and watch as they did it. He wanted to make sure they weren't hurting me. Aside from all my doctors, the most deserved "Thank you" goes out to my Mom, Dad, and my Aunt Debbie. If it wasn't for the three of them I don't know where I would be emotionally and physically. I love you guys so much!

Having restricted vision has really impacted my life. Because of the tumor, my retina and macula were detached. With that being said, I have little to no vision in my right eye. My ability to do everyday things has been impacted. It's often hard to do things that require great precision because my depth perception is off. Reading can be hard, and something as simple as catching a ball or grabbing something from someone's hand can give me anxiety because I have to try to calculate where my hands actually need to be. I have to think about things instead of just being able to do them. It can even be embarrassing, these things that I used to be able to do I can't anymore. I used to be so good at sports and now that my vision is compromised, I can't do things the way I used to.

I am currently attending Orange Ulster Boces, and am enrolled in the nursing program. After being on this tremendous journey, I have decided that I want to peruse a career in ophthalmology. I have found so much interest in the eyes. I want to be able to help people take care of such a crucial sense.

I have known Jessica and her family since June 2013. I felt compelled to share her story and document her brave beauty. Below are some of what I captured. I am so grateful that Jessica and her mom and sister allowed me to share in these moments! Please leave some love for this AMAZING FAMILY!

A Blank Canvas in Your Driveway {Orange County NY Child Photographer}

The weather this past weekend was absolutely gorgeous! A little taste of spring was in the air. We took advantage with some outside artwork. I love watching my children create art. When I create art, through photography, I have a specific goal in mind. I have the end result somewhere in my brain and I work to get that in print. When my daughter creates, she just does. She is not sure what will come next. She hastily chooses colors and just decides in the moment where it will end up. She does not worry if she is going to mess it up, or if she picked up the wrong color. She just goes with it.

As I watched her take our driveway - her blank canvas - to a piece of art, I reflected on how using her approach to art can create a beautiful masterpiece.

For the few days that her beautiful masterpiece remained on our driveway, we enjoyed it - it brought many a smile. Then the snow/rain/ice came. And out of that came other blank canvas to create a new masterpiece on another spring like day.

And just because this gives a glimpse as to how much fun she had.

Chocolate lips, pink chalk covered nose, silly face, big blue eyes, crazy hair, rainbow in the background = a wonderful afternoon.

Almost 50 days! {Orange County NY Photographer}

As I approach the 50th day of my 2016 daily project, I am sharing with you a collage of a grapefruit. Yes, a grapefruit.

Some days, my images are just a moment from the day as it is happening. Other days, I like to think outside the lifestyle box and stretch my creative wings a bit.

As I contemplated what to photograph yesterday morning, I narrowed it down between a self portrait or a grapefruit. I have not yet documented myself in this project but I also wanted to do something a bit more creative... (and self portraits are not my favorite either.)

So, I picked up my Lensbaby and my macro tubes and figured lets work with a grapefruit. No matter how long you have been in a creative field, or any field for that matter, you can ALWAYS learn something new. Try something different.

So I spent a few minutes with a cut grapefruit and this is what I came up with.

Yes, none of these are award winning but I spent the time to figure how I wanted it to look as a finished product. (The bonus was that my subject was cooperative. ;) )

An Easy Way to Display Your Family Photos {Orange County NY Lifestyle Photographer}

Even though I take pictures of my family on a daily basis, there is nothing like hiring another professional to document my family, with me in the frame instead of behind the camera!

In October, we took a road trip to visit friends in Rochester. I had decided to book my dear friend, Jessica Svoboda Photography, to do a family session. We had no clue how the weather would be, but thankfully Jessica was flexible and able to accommodate us on a beautiful warm October day. Jessica also did a family session with us back in 2013 (you can check out her blog post here).

Our family pictures from 2013 had been hanging in our entry hallway for the past 2 years. I was excited to spend some time deciding what I wanted to print from this year's session. When I place a print order, it is like Christmas morning when that print package arrives on my front steps! Every.single.time - whether it is a client order or a personal order.

It truly brings me joy to see my family pictures in print. I am a huge advocate of PRINTING YOUR PICTURES. Even just to put in frames around your house. Seeing my family together evokes an internal happiness throughout my home.

I know that sometimes it can be a challenge to figure out what to print and how to display, so I have made it SUPER easy for myself. Don't get me wrong, I love the feel and look of a canvas (more on that in another blog post soon!), but this way has made it so much easier to get those pictures displayed!

I purchased this wall gallery from Kohl's on a whim a few years back. And all it takes is a few prints, and a few minutes to swap out the prints.

The final results with updated pictures are on the wall for friends and family to see when they walk in the door!

One year ago today, we were on a plane headed to Disney World. Last year, I wrote a blog post for Light Inspired with some tips for taking your first trip to Disney World and I included a few pictures. (You can click HERE to read it!) As the one year anniversary approached, I realized that I never shared more pictures. So I have decided to share them with you today!

Wow, the holiday's went by so fast! The months leading up to the end of the year are always jam packed with sessions and family events that before I can even reflect, we have started the new year!

I am so thankful for each and everyone of my clients! 2015 was so amazing! I had the pleasure of documenting so many fun families, couples, babies, and children! I am truly looking forward to what 2016 has in store!

During my busy time, I find myself documenting my family less, so this year I have decided to start a photography project so that I can remedy that! It is a project where I document a single moment of each day of the year. It can be of anything, but as long as I document each day.

I will be posting the daily images on my IG account - @sallysosler. I will also be doing a weekly wrap up post so that you can see what I have been up to. I hope that you will follow me along in this fun project. I did a 52 week project a few years ago as well as a collaborative project with the Light Inspired Forum last year. These projects always push me to keep up with leaning new things about photography every day.
